Rookies (Sotsugyo)
Departures - New Japanese Cinema
Forget Harry Potter, Star Trek or Avatar, the biggest film at the Japanese box-office over the past year has been the homegrown blockbuster Rookies. A real crowdpleaser, it follows Kawato Koichi (Ryuta Sato) as he starts a new job as literature teacher at Futakotamagawa High School. It is a fresh start after an unfortunate incident involving an assault on a wayward pupil. It could also be a fresh start for the members of the Baseball Club, a band of delinquent, girl - chasing thugs that Koichi is determined to whip into shape and take to the Koshien High School Baseball Tournament.
