Crazy Heart
Jeff Bridges has been a star for almost forty years and is as constant as the setting sun. He never gives a bad performance but despite four previous nominations he has never won an Oscar. All that could change with his heartbreaking, beautifully observed performance in Crazy Heart. Bridges plays 'Bad Blake', a boozy singer/songwriter full of charisma and self-destructive tendencies. He still manages to stumble on stage and delight the dwindling crowds at backroads venues where they remember the glory days. Then he meets reporter Maggie Gyllenhaal. A sparky encounter hints at a relationship and a stability he has rarely known if he can conquer his demons. A classic story of redemption is told with a heartrending simplicity that stretches from the striking cinematography to the soulful music by T Bone Burnett (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and the late Stephen Bruton which is performed by Bridges and Colin Farrell as Tommy Sweet. It is Bridges who makes it special playing with a subtlety and restraint that is entirely characteristic and completely engaging.
